Mexican girls training hard in preparation for NORCECA Tournament

TIJUANA, Mexico, April 20, 2010 – The U-18 Girls Mexican National Team is training at full speed and playing scrimmage matches against Cuba in preparation for next week’s NORCECA Continental Tournament in Guatemala where one ticket to the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and three spots for the 2011 FIVB Youth Championships are at stake.

Mexico is currently the No. 1 ranked team in NORCECA based on the points obtained in the previous regional event in 2008 in Puerto Rico where they finished second and their ninth place at the 2009 FIVB World Championship in Thailand.

The group of players has been training for the last three weeks and the friendly matches against the invited Cubans, who are not taking part in the NORCECA competition, have the objective of fine tuning the final selection.

Mexico is first seeded in Pool A of the 10 team event alongside of Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica. Pool B consists of Guatemala, Puerto Rico and El Salvador and Pool C is composed by five-time champions USA, Dominican Republic and Canada.

Teams will compete in a preliminary pool round and the two pool winners with best points-ratio will advance directly to the semifinal phase, while the third first place team will play in the quarterfinals against the second place sides.
