Mexico beats Trinidad & Tobago in Pool A

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 27, 2010 – Mexico claimed a 25-16, 25-7, 25-11 victory against Trinidad & Tobago in action corresponding to Pool A of NORCECA Girls’ Youth Championship.

The Mexicans, first ranked in NORCECA, relied on their strong and accurate serves to subdue the very athletic Trinidadians. The winners outscored their opponents 9-0 in serves and 10-5 in blocks.

Samantha Bricio led Mexico with 15 points and Gabriela Zazueta and Gabriela Nieto contributed 10 and 9 points respectively. Channon Thompson tallied 14 for the losers.

“We started slowly but went from less to more,” said Alicia Castro, the Mexican captain. “Finally we caught our rhythm and the serves were the key for us.”

“We have been working hard and we are well prepared,” said Jose Bernal, the head coach. “The game of volleyball starts with the serve and that’s our main weapon. To play against a tall team like Trinidad & Tobago is a challenge we always enjoy.”

Arianne Matthew, the captain of Trinidad & Tobago: “We had ups and downs but we enjoyed playing against Mexico.”

Head coach Macsood Ali: “The Mexicans have very tough serves but at the same time my team is very young and willing to learn. We are going to win two or three matches before the tournament is over.”
