Puerto Ricans dominate El Salvador in Pool B

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 27, 2010 – Puerto Rico showed a lot of potential while defeating El Salvador in straight sets 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-12) in Pool B of NORCECA Continental Championship for girls under 18 years-old.

The taller Puerto Ricans dominated the match with their powerful attack despite the big effort of the Salvadorans who played with enthusiasm.

Daly Santana and Pilar Victoria each recorded 14 points for Puerto Rico and Lucia Castro charted 9 points.

“I think we could have played better and we need to be more focused,” said Daly Santana, the captain of Puerto Rico. “The good thing was that we recovered from all our lapses.”

“The score doesn’t say the whole true because our opponents never gave up,” said Eric Gonzalez, the coach of Puerto Rico. “We have only two players with international experience and have to deal with that factor.”

Andrea Manzur, the captain of El Salvador said: “We tried our best but the Puerto Ricans are taller than us and have more reach. We need to improve step by step.”

Coach Ingrid Rivas said: “Our team doesn’t have the experience and the girls were really happy about playing a team like Puerto Rico.”
