Dominicans spark a reaction to defeat Canada

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 28, 2010 – Dominican Republic recovered from losing the first set and went on to defeat Canada 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 in Pool C of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Championship.

Both teams have 1-1 win-loss record and on Thursday the Dominicans play against weak Jamaica while the Canadians face the task of meeting favorites USA.

The tandem of Pamela Soriano and Elizabeth Martinez led the winners with 27 and 26 points respectively. Alexa Gray (18) and Megan Festival (11) finished in double figures for Canada.

“It was a very tense match especially after losing the first set,” said Nairobi Agramonte, the Dominican Captain. “But we all had the confidence in our ability to play and it showed from the second set on.”

“We made a key substitution late in the first set that proved to be a key for us,” said coach Mayo Sibilio about middle-blocker Erika Mota replacing Luz Nunez. “We are catching our rhythm after playing probably the two strongest teams in the competition during our first two outings”.

Jesse Knight, the coach of Canada said: “I think we played great and showed that we can compete at this level. After the first set we kept battling but couldn’t adjust to the powerful attack of Dominican Republic.”
