Argentina improves record 2-1 in pool A

CALI, Colombia, December 3, 2021. - Argentina improved their record 2-1 in pool A after defeating Suriname 3-0 (25-11, 25-4, 25-9) at the women’s volleyball tournament of the I Junior Pan American Games Cali-Valle 2021 at Evangelista Mora Coliseum.

 

Argentina concludes pool-play with 10 points out of 2 wins and one loss, and waits for the result between Colombia and Mexico for their final position. Suriname with 0-3 finishes fourth place in pool A and will face Puerto Rico for seventh place.

 

Argentina was too much for Suriname, scoring on overwhelming 43-13 advantage in attacks, 5-1 in blocks and a huge 12-1 margin in service points. Suriname committed fewer errors (15-24).

 

All Argentineans had a chance to perform, with opposite hitter Melisa Corzo leading on 9 points; followed by opposite hitter Juliana Ocaña and outside hitter Angeles Ligorría scoring 8 points each. Opposite hitter Lakeesha Esseboom topped Suriname with 6 points.

 

Angeles Ligorría, captain of Argentina: “This was a good match to secure us as a team after yesterday’s loss, this gives us confidence in ourselves and our performance. We just have to wait, hoping to move into the next round. We were expecting a tough competition because our team isn’t solid yet, but we are doing really well”.

 

Cabriella Bouterse, captain of Suriname: “Maybe the score might not say that, but I think we played more volleyball. We didn’t execute as we should have but there was more spirit in us. We have one more game to make it right, tomorrow we expect a tough match because nobody wants to finish last, and still it’s been a great experience being here”
