Chile dominates Costa Rica in first match of U20 Cup

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 19, 2015 – Chile beat Costa Rica in straight sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-12) in the first match of the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup at Ricardo Arias Volleyball Pavilion in Santo Domingo on Sunday.

The Chileans relied on their more aggressive serves and a better organized game plan to claim the victory in the six-team round robin competition that runs until April 24.

“It is a good start but we had to work for it,” Chilean captain Catalina Melo said after the match. “At the beginning we were a little bit anxious playing the first match but then we calmed down and got the win.”

“We were nervous and tried to do well but failed in the reception and lost the concentration,” Costa Rican captain Tatiana Sayles said.

Hugo Jauregui, coach of Chile said: “Our plan was not giving points away by our own mistakes. We achieved that for moments but also committed too many errors. Our goal is to reduce the number of mistakes in our next match.”

Andres Lopez Castro, coach of Costa Rica said: “It was an important match for discovering our shortages. We tried to find the weak points of the opponents but they dominate their system very well.”
