Costa Rica claims fifth place at U20 Cup

 

   

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 24, 2015 – Costa Rica defeated Nicaragua 3-1 (25-23, 12-25, 25-21, 25-16) in the match for the fifth position at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup at Ricardo Arias Pavilion in Santo Domingo on Friday.

 

It was the second victory in as many days for the Costa Rican side over their Central American rivals.

 

Each team made 30 unforced errors and scored with 7 blocks. The winners held a slight advantage in attacks 40-37 while the defeated side edged in the aces category 11-10.

 

Tania Carazo les Costa Rica with 17 points followed by Allison Font and Mariana Rodriguez with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

 

Florelisa Smith topped Nicaragua with 14 points and Eugenia Sequeira notched 12 tallies. Maria Cruz and Ericka Conto finished with 11 and 10 points in the loss.

 

Tatyana Sailes, captain of Costa Rica: “It was a good game and our opponents played much better so we had to give an extra and play with better criteria. It has been a rich experience.”

 

Eugenia Sequeira, captain of Nicaragua: “We went out with a lot of desire and I feel satisfied with our performance, but at the same time I think we could give more. Anyway we learned a little about competing.”

 

Andres Lopez, coach of Costa Rica: “The tournament has been a lesson to show us that we need to work hard in our zone. I hope we can take advantage of these six matches we have played.”

 

Claudia Noguera, coach of Nicaragua: “Our girls gave all they have and we played two very good sets but then in the third and fourth sets we lost the concentration due to our lack of experience. The tournament has been a lesson to go back home and work more.”
