Cuba claims close victory over Dominican Republic

 

   

SAN ISIDRO, Dominican Republic, May 13, 2015 – Cuba outdueled hosts Dominican Republic in five sets (27-25, 24-26, 22-25, 30-28, 15-13) in the second match of the Maximo Gomez Cup, a friendly men’s volleyball series touring several provinces of the country.

 

It was the second victory for the Cuban side in the seven-match series which continue on Wednesday at Max Simon Pavilion of La Romana, in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic.

 

Cuba’s Mario Rivera topped the scores with 25 points in the victory while Miguel Gutierrez and Javier Concepcion contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively. Jonathan Mercedes had 23 points for the Dominican Republic followed by Mario Frias and Antonio Rodriguez with 16 apiece.

 

Major General Elvis Marcelino Feliz, Chief of the Dominican Air Force, saluted the members of both sides and made the ceremonial first serve before the match.

 

The exhibition series is sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation of the Dominican Republic under the organization of the Dominican Volleyball Federation.
