Cuba recovers to defeat Dominican Republic

 

   

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, May 15, 2015 – Cuba rallied from one-set deficit to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21) in the fourth match of Maximo Gomez Volleyball Men’s Cup held at Club Calero Pavilion in Santo Domingo province on Thursday.

 

Cuba, represented by its men’s second unit, has won the four matches played thus far of the seven-game competition across the Dominican Republic.

 

Abraham Alonso and Jose Romero each had 20 points as the scoring leaders of Cuba followed by Mario Rivera with 15. Jonathan Mercedes led the defeated side with 15 points while Antonio Rodriguez was next with 14.

 

The series continue on Friday and Saturday at the multisport facilities in Moca and San Cristobal, respectively, with the final match in Bani on Sunday morning.

 

Before the final match, both teams will visit the Maximo Gomez Museum where a ceremony in honour of the Cuban independence hero and Dominican-born Maximo Gomez will take place.
