Dominican Mejia Oviedo to be proposed as new COI Member

 

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 11, 2017 – Dominican Republic’s Luis Mejía Oviedo will be one of nine new members proposed by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee for election at the IOC Session in Lima, Peru from September 13 to 16.

 

Mejía Oviedo is one of five individual members –three women and two men- while the other four represent the National Olympic Committees and the International Federations.

 

Alongside Mejia Oviedo the individual members are Baklai Temengil of Palau, Kristin Kloster Aasen of Norway, Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul of Thailand and Jiri Kejval of Czech Republic.

 

Mejía Oviedo and Kejval are presidents of their respective National Olympic Committees, while Temengil and Kloster Aasen NOC are vice presidents. Leeswadtrakul is the president of the Thailand’s Badminton Association.

 

Representing National Olympic Committees Continental Associations will be proposed Neven Ivan Ilic Alvarez of Chile from PASO and Khalid Muhammad Al Zubair, president of the Oman Olympic Committee who presides the Arab Continental Association of NOC.

 

The representatives of International Federations will be proposed Jean-Christophe Rolland of France, president of the World Rowing, and Ingmar de Vos of Belgium, president of the International Federation of Equestrian Sports.

 

These nine candidates offer various skillsets and come from backgrounds as diverse as sports, management, volunteering, engineering, business administration, commerce and tourism, the media and NGOs. All of them can bring skills and experience needed by the IOC, and aim to further strengthen the ranks of the Olympic Movement in the years to come.

 

All proposed members have been vetted by the IOC Ethics Commission, which has conducted integrity checks.
