Dominican Republic downs Colombia to achieve a 2-0 record at Pan Am Cup

HUACHO, Peru, June 11 2012 - Dominican Republic won its second match at the Movistar Women’s Pan American Cup on Tuesday. The Dominican Team defeated Colombia 3-0 (25-29, 25-14, 25-21) and now is with a 2-0 record atop of Pool C.

Captain Bethania de la Cruz scored 12 points while Annerys Vargas and Brayelin Martinez finished with 9 apiece. For Colombia that is now 0-2, Danna Escobar was the top scorer with 10.

“I think we played better, our service worked better and also the attack to achieve our goal of improving day by day. Both of our rivals, Colombia and Brazil are very young, and also had a good performance, but the responsibility is ours and that’s why we have to correct every mistake in our side,” said Marcos Kwiek coach of the Dominican Republic.

“They are very energetic because are too young, fortunately we combined our capabilities, we had to win as best as possible to have the best point-balance in our favor”, Bethania de la Cruz stated.

“We are in an integration process of some senior players and some young players, with tall athletes and a good libero”, said Mauro Marasciulo, head coach of the Colombian team that tried to come back on the third set. “This is part of our preparation for the World Championship and I think we played better than yesterday”.

Colombia will face Brazil and Dominican Republic will play against Mexico this wednesday on the last day of action in Huacho.
