Dominican Republic swept Puerto Rico

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 15, 2021 – Host Dominican Republic swept Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-20) to join United States as undefeated teams at the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup following three days of actions.

It was a one-sided match with the Dominicans dominating in blocking 11-4, service winners 7-0 and attacks 36-16. Each team finished with 21 unforced errors.

Yonkaira Peña led the winners with 14 points followed by Gaila Gonzalez who registered 13, including 4 aces. Prisilla Rivera and Jineiry Martinez each contributed 7 points to the win despite playing only the first two frames.

Aida Bauza led Puerto Rico with 9 points and Gabriela Alicea added 6 points in the loss.

Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic: “Today we were focused on the game since the very beginning. I had the opportunity to give playing time to all the girls who need to get in the rhythm of the tournament. Tomorrow we have a more mature opponent (Canada) than Puerto Rico so we have to maintain the focus and keep working.”

Carlos Rodriguez, coach of Puerto Rico: “We were playing against a very experience team, winner of many titles and these girls having their first international appearance. I think we left more than satisfied, especially with the last set when we were able to battle.”
