Eight countries to play for the final spot to Tokyo at NORCECA Continental Cup Finals

COLIMA, Mexico, June 23, 2021.- Eight countries are set to play for the final spot to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games at the NORCECA Continental Cup Finals that kicks off on June 25 at Colima, Mexico.

 

In seeding order for the event, Mexico, Canada, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands in men; Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico in women will play the single elimination competition starting Friday at the Morelos Sport Unit in the City of Colima.

 

With the United States already qualified with two teams per gender and Canada with two women pairs to the Olympics via FIVB World Tour, the NORCECA Continental Cup Finals favorite are hosts Mexico with Josue Gaxiola/Jose Luis Rubio and Juan Virgen/Lombardo Ontiveros and Canadians Schachter Samuel/Sam Pedlow and Grant O’Gorman/Ben Saxton in the men’s field, and Cuban pairs of Lidianny Echevarría/Yanisleydis Sanchez and Leila Martinez/Mailen Deliz in the women’s division.

 

This is the tentative schedule, pending PCR testing from Nicaragua’s delegation and one U.S. Virgin Islands’ player. Mexico in both genders with Canada in men and Cuba in women earned a bye into Saturday’s semifinals.
