KRALENDIJK, Bonaire, June 24, 2018 – Sigourney Kame completely dominated the closing ceremony with five individual awards after leading Suriname to the gold medal in the inaugural CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association) Under-23 Women’s Championship here tonight at the Jorge Nicholas Sports Hall, Bonaire.

The captain, who began the competition with a tournament-high 24 points in their opening match against Curacao on Friday night, was voted Top Scorer, Best Server, No. 2 Outside Hitter, Best Digger and also picked up the leading prize as the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Champions Suriname actually ended up with seven of the 12 individual awards as Xiony Kidjo was adjudged Best Libero and Farizada Kurban was the Best Setter.

Silver-medallists Curacao collected four prizes as Anais Conradus was the Best No. 1 Outside Hitter, Giany Hooi, Best Receiver, Jewengely Hart, Best Opposite Hitter, and their captain Sharneska Esclodina was the Best Blocker 1.

The other award was the Best Blocker 2 and it went to Danielle Christian from bronze-medallists United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

Suriname were unbeaten from their four matches in the three-day straight round-robin competition, while Curacao were triumphant three times, once more than USVI and twice more than Aruba.

Bonaire, the youngest team in the tournament with no players over the age of 17, did not win a set in only their third competition at this level.

It was the first time that they ever hosted an international tournament and CAZOVA president Mushtaque Mohammed presented Gisette Emer, vice-president of their volleyball federation, with a plaque to recognize their tremendous effort during the closing ceremony.
