Five South American Teams to take part in Pan Am Cup

 

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, May 25, 2017 – For the first time in the history of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup five South American teams will take part in the intercontinental competition that offers spots to the different groups of next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix.

 

Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela are the teams from South America to join the sides representing Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and United States from NORCECA.

 

The competition to be held in the cities of Lima and Cañete, Peru begins on June 17 and closes on June 25. Teams will arrive two days before the start of the tournament and will depart one day after the conclusion.

 

Brazil is the only South American country crowned champions of the annual event having won it three times together with three runners-up finishes and one third place.

 

The Brazilians won in 2006, 2009 and 2011 and claimed the silver medal in 2007-08 and 2012. The samba girls won a bronze medal in 2005.

 

Peru and Argentina, two major powers of South America in women’s volleyball are the other two countries of the region to earn podium positions in the history of the event.

 

Peru took a silver medal in 2010 while Argentina finished in third place in the editions of 2008, 2013 and 2015.

 

Cuba, United States and Dominican Republic share the lead of gold medals with four apiece for the previous fifteen editions.

 

The Dominican Republic is atop of the all-time podiums with 14, including seven silver medals. United States are next with 9, followed by Cuba and Brazil each with seven.
