Fonoimoana and Turner claim women’s gold in Punta Cana
PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, September 30, 2018 – Under more
amiable weather conditions than one day earlier when afternoon
actions were halted due to rain and strong winds, the Punta Cana
Beach Volleyball Tournament, the fourth stop of the 2018 NORCECA
Circuit, came to a happy end especially for Falyn Fonoimoana and
Molly Turner of United States who won the women’s gold medal on
The American pair defeated top-seeded Canadian twins Nicole and
Megan McNamara in straight sets 2-0 (24-22, 21-15).
In the match for the bronze medal, Mexicans Martha Revuelta and
Zara Orellana won a three-set duel with Cubans Yanisleidis
Sánchez and Arín Hechavarría 2-1 (21-16, 16-21, 15-12).
In semifinals, McNamara/McNamara stopped Sánchez/Hechavarría
2-0 (21-15, 21-18) and Fonoimoana/Turner dispatched Revuelta/Orellana
2-0 (21-13, 21-16).
In the quarterfinals:
McNamara/McNamara breezed past Swan Mendoza/Socorro Lopez of
Nicaragua 2-0 (21-9, 21-8), Sanchez/Hechavarría overcame Katie
Spieler and Karissa Cook of United States 2-1 (17-21, 21-15,
15-13), Fonoimoana/Turner outclassed Blanca Regino and Estefanie
Bethancourt of Guatemala 2-0 (21-13, 21-15) and Revuelta/Orellana
edged Marcela Araya and Eugenia Ramírez of Costa Rica 2-1
(21-13, 16-21, 15-10).
