Gaila Gonzalez leads Dominican Republic to second victory

 

LIMA, Peru, August 15, 2018 - Dominican Republic prevailed in straight sets against Mexico 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) to obtain its second victory in Pool B of the IV Cup Panamericana U23 held at the Manuel Bonilla Coliseum in Miraflores.

 

The offense of the winning team was led by Gaila Gonzalez who contributed 21 points to the Dominican victory, followed by Vielka Peralta with 17 and Jineiry Martinez with 12. For Mexico the individual scoring was led by Uxue Guereca and Melanie Parra with 14 units each.

 

Wagner Pacheco's team got their second triumph, dominating the basics of attack (51-36), blocking (8-3) and service (5-2). Mexico reduced the unforced errors to 11 while the Dominicans registered 20.

 

Mexico will close the group stage playing against Costa Rica on Thursday 16 at 3:00 p.m., and at 5:00 p.m. Dominican Republic will face Colombia.

 

The top scorer of the Dominican Republic, Gaila Gonzalez: "It was a difficult match at times, but we knew how to face them. We knew that the Mexican team has a good attack and that is why we worked hard on our blockade, we have been prepared to keep the title and we know that we have all the tools to achieve our goal."

 

The captain of Mexico, Uxue Guereca: "We know the power of the Dominican Republic, but we went out to play with everything and show the best of our game, I think that even though they are a team with a lot of height and strength, it was a close match and that leaves me happy with my team, because they did not give up and fought until the last point".
