Guatemala sweeps Belize in their first tournament victory

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, October 1, 2019.- Guatemala swept Belize 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) in their first tournament win at the eighteenth AFECAVOL U21 Men’s Central American Championship being held at FESAVOL Gymnasium of San Salvador, El Salvador.

Guatemala earned five points for a total of seven ranking points and improve their win-loss record (1-1) with a huge 10-4 advantage in blocking and scoring on 31 opponent errors against 16 over Belize. They also finished with 29-27 margin in kills and 5-3 in aces.

Oustide hitter Francisco Gamboa led Guatemala with 15 points on 11 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces, joined by opposite player Jose Rodrigo Carrillo with 11 points including 7 kills and 3 blocks. Outside hitter Ernest Broaster once again topped Belize scoring 14 points on 10 kills, one block and 3 aces, while opposite player Kaelem Ingram added 12 points all on kills.

Guatemala (1-1) will rest on day three of competition, while Belize (0-2) faces Costa Rica.

Francisco Gamboa, top scorer of Guatemala: “The difference from yesterday’s performance was our unity as a team; added to the fact that we were really motivated to come out on top”.

Ernest Broaster, top scorer of Belize: “Our passing was not as good as yesterday and we need to improve on that so our middles can be more incorporated. Personally I believe I did well in hitting and service”.

Reider Lucas, Head Coach of Guatemala: “It’s an important result, there is a bit more integration, today they were more concentrated than yesterday. Our opponent did not pressure that much. The most important fact is winning five points and we must prepare the team for harder matches”.

Albert Humes, Head Coach of Belize: “I think our guys left their hearts at home; I think they did not come mentally prepared. The practice this morning was real high but they didn’t come around during the game. We will definitely rebound tomorrow; you can see it in their face that they are feeling it deep”.
