Honduras beat spirited Belize 

 

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 14, 2017. - Honduras beat a spirited Belize 3-1 (25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19) in the women’s Volleyball tournament of the XI Central American Games Managua 2017 being held at Alexis Argüello sport complex.

 

The match developed slowly, with long rallies with Belize pressing Honduras’ receivers with effective serves. Honduras held the advantage while scoring on 43 opponent errors and limiting their own to 27.

 

Honduras earned their second tournament win for a 2-2 record and 8 points, while Belize stands with 0-4 record and 2 points.

 

Belize did better in blocks with 8-4 advantage and with 10-7 margin in aces. Honduras finished with 43-32 margin in kills.

 

Opposite Cecille Thompson carried Honduras with 21 points all in kills and middle blocker Tessa Flores chipped in with 10 points. Belize balanced their offense between outside hitter Sherika Burton and opposite Shantell Arnold recording 13 and 11 points respectively.

 

On Friday, Honduras (2-2) plays El Salvador (1-4) and Belize (0-4) meets Guatemala (2-1).

 

Captain of Honduras Tessa Flores: “Our serves were effective in sets one and two; we relaxed in set three because we thought we’d earned the victory. As we followed our coaches’ instructions, we got back into the game in set four”.

 

Head coach of Honduras Osiel Vasquez: “Belize has improved as the tournament develops, they’ve used strength against every opponent and it is my understanding that they’ve shown progress the past couple of years. They were a better in serves and blocking because of their height. The teams here in Central America have ups and downs because of their lack of international games to improve their level”.
