Coaches see with good eyes the U-20 Pan American Cup

LIMA, Peru, June 15, 2011 – Preparing their teams for the upcoming world championship is the main purpose of some of the coaches but all of them talked with enthusiasm about the birth of the 1st U-20 Women’s Pan American Cup that kicks off on Thursday at Miguel Grau Coliseum during the usual press conference held before the Technical Meeting.

Braulio Godinez, Costa Rica: “We are in a renovation process after the senior’s worlds in Japan 2010 with some players going out and we are bringing here some of the substitutes. We hope to have soon with us coach Xavier Perales, an Argentinean based in Spain, assigned by FIVB. The tournament should help the growth my players individually and also collectively ang get some rhythm for the senior Pan American Cup in Juarez, where four of these players will join the main selection”.

Wilfredo Robinson, Cuba: “The objective of Cuba is to consolidate our regular team for the world championship. Our team has good height and good attacking power and serve and we will try our best to have a good strategy preparing for the fundamental event which is the world championship also in this country. We have to take the Dominicans with care, since that’s a team who defeated us in the NORCECA Junior in 2010 and the Argentineans who defeated us at the Baja California Cup this year, as both teams are in Pool B”.

Wagner Pacheco, Dominican Republic: “Our purpose is to prepare the team the right way for the World event here in Lima. This Cup is good to achieve that goal since we will be facing some good and tough teams and we have not had many warm-up matches, so this I very positive. The world tournament will be the tougher. There are three strong teams and anything can happen. I come looking for a medal. ¿Which one? I don’t know. It depends on our work.”

Juan Andrés León, El Salvador: “The main objective is to give a good show since this country is joining the world of volleyball. We finished second in the Central American Junior and because of the ranking we were included in the Cup with the absence of United States. We know that our expectations are limited but we are confident that the experience will be a good one and the girls can transmit it to their teammates in clubs and schools about how volley is and the way to compete. That’s the way we can help a country that needs logistic support and the structure for its sport system.”

Victor Garcia, Mexico: “We are here with a U-18 Team preparing for the World Championship in Turkey next August. This Cup is another phase of our preparation but we hope to qualify to the finals, to finish among the top-four, even though our girls are younger, it is a challenge for us, because we want to finish among the top-eight in Turkey.”

Natalia Málaga, Perú: “As any other coach I want to have the best place for my team and at the same time it serves a lot as preparation for the World Championship. My goal in this Cup is to be among the top-three, and that’s the same also for the world event. We will use every match to fine tune some details and lead the team to a good performance.”

Yonathan Rojas, Venezuela: “Most of the players are around 16 and 17-years-old and is projected for the next cycle ot the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. The important thing for us here is that our girls learn and get the experience to be prepared to compete with strength and psychologically prepared.”
