Dominican Republic finishes second in Pool A

ROSARITO, Mexico, June 22, 2010 - Dominican Republic defeated Canada 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-14) to win second place of Pool A, with a 3-1 record in the Pan American Women’s Volleyball Club.

Dominican Jeoselyna Rodriguez came off the bench to lead her side with 15 points. Four other teammates finished in double figures as Prisilla Rivera, Annerys Vargas, Lisvel Eve and Milagros Cabral charted 14, 13, 12 and 10 points respectively. Canadian Sarah Pavan had a match-high 17 points while Tammy Mahon and Tonya Mokelki chipped in 13 and 11 tallies.

“Canada was a tough opponent, they played well with good blocking game and very tall athletes, that was the kind of rival we expected to face in this tournament, and maybe that’s the kind of rival for the next round like USA, for example with good blocking skills and good defense”, Dominican Republic Coach Marcos Kwiek said.

“We started well on the first set, but we gave away points on the second, when you do that you can´t expect to win at this level, we must close with more power at the end”, stated Canada’s coach, Arnd Ludwig.

“We knew we had to face a very physical match against Canada, they made us to play, their height was an issue, they are the tallest players of the tournament and had to employ our best attack and best weapons to win”, said the Dominican Cabral after the match.
