CHIAPAS, México, June 20, 2009.-
Jose Miguel Caceres enjoyed a
wonderful night with 37 points leading Dominican
Republic to a 3-2 victory over Puerto Rico in
the match for the bronze medal of the IV Men’s
Pan American Cup.
More than 2,000 spectators
watched the action at the Polyforum and the
score was 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-10.
The match was an epic offensive
battle between the two teams, besides the
offensive show by Caceres and Juan Figueroa of
Puerto Rico.
Victor Batista added 16 points to
the Dominican attack and Elnis Palomino added
13. Figueroa had 25 points for Puerto Rico and
Victor Bird and Ivan Perez had 17 apiece.
“I have no words to describe the
emotions I am feeling now. Puerto Rico played a
great game and it was another historic contest
between our teams like always. It is very
important for the Dominican volleyball to
qualify again to the America’s Cup. This victory
is part of the hard work we have been doing in
our program under the leadership of Nelson
Ramirez,” said Jacinto Campechano, the Dominican
coach.
Fernando Morales, the captain of
Puerto Rico said: “It was a tough game, as it
was expected. A very tough game and we are not
happy because we didn’t reach our goal but they
played a great game.”
The victory earned the Dominican
Republic the third place of the Cup and the
qualification to the America’s Cup for second
consecutive year. |
