Mexico secures a spot in 2011 FIVB Girls World Championship

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 1, 2010 – Mexico advanced to the gold medal match of NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship following a victory over Dominican Republic 21-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 on Saturday.

The win secures the Mexicans of a berth in the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship in Turkey while they are still in contention for the one ticket at stake to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore next August.

The Mexican side recovered from a shaky first set and established consistent serves which provoked many receiving errors by the Dominicans.

Samantha Bricio carried most of the load of the winning offense compiling 37 points while Valeria Hernandez and Gabriela Zazueta added 11 and 10 respectively. Dominican Elizabeth Martinez topped her team with 11 tallies and Pamela Soriano and Nairobi Agramonte each charted 10 points.

“We are so happy by achieving the goal of advancing to the World Championship,” said Alicia Castro, the captain of Mexico. “We started a little bit tense, but then recovered and played as a team.”

“After the first set we made some adjustments in our formation and it paid the fruits,” said Mexican coach Jose Bernal. “We have achieved our main goal since we arrived here and that was to play the finals.”

“We had problems with the reception in the second and third sets and the setter couldn’t do a good job,” said Dominican assistant coach Juan Capellan. “You have to give credit to the Mexican floating serve which was very consistent.”
