USA wins gold and tickets to Singapore and Turkey

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 2, 2010 – USA defeated Mexico in four sets (25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17) winning their fifth consecutive title at NORCECA Girls’ Youth Volleyball Championship. In the process they also won the ticket to represent the Continental Confederation at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore next August.

By reaching the gold medal match both teams had clinched spots in next year’s FIVB Championship for girls under 18-years old in Turkey.

Puerto Rico, who earlier defeated Dominican Republic in the match for the bronze medal, also qualified to the FIVB competition.

Brittany Howard and Mallory McCage led USA with 19 and 18 points respectively and Mexican Samantha Bricio led all the scorers with a match-high 29 points.

“I am very pleased with the way our team played,” said USA Coach Jim Stone. “I feel very good about our team performance. Mexico is a good team, the best defensive team we have ever played.”

On getting the chance to play in the Youth Olympics, Stone said “it will help tremendously this inexperience group of players to play in a competition like that.”

Mexican Coach Jose Bernal commented: “We made a big effort but in the fourth set we let them to build a wide margin and then we couldn’t catch. In general, we played a good game and I am pleased with our silver medal.”
