Mexico defeat Costa Rica for second triumph in Cordoba

CORDOBA, Mexico, November 16 2014 - México closed with another night of celebration at the Cordoba Arena after beating Costa Rica in straight sets (25-15, 25-20 and 25-20). Mexican captain Andrea Rangel topped with 12 points for Mexico, while Carolina Carranza closed with 10 for Mexico.

The Willis Sisters, Angela and Verania tallied 7 apiece for Costa Rica. Claudia Resendiz served for five aces and Claudia Rios aced twice. Costa Rica was superior in the blocking game with a 7-3 advantage after three sets and got 26 points by error from Mexico, while the local team grabbed 22 from the Central American squad.

“We are not satisfied. We have to get at least two sets to qualify to the next round. Mexico was a great winner and got all the credit. They played a right match and deserved to win,” stated Horacio Bastit, coach of Costa Rica.

“Today we faced a team that worked with more order and with a good tactical discipline. We began with a very aggressive service that made the things more complicated to their attackers,” Mexican coach Jorge Azair remarked.

“We made mistakes, nobody is perfect, but we are happy for this victory that was so important,” said Mexican captain Andrea Rangel. “It was complicated for us, but we were getting into rhythm and started to gain confidence,” said middle blocker Jocelyn Urias.

“It was a tough match, I want to congratulate Mexico. Unfortunately we could not play as we did in our first one, but expect to improve in the next one,” Costa Rican captain, Angela Willis indicated.
