Mexico wins the U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup


MONTERREY, Mexico, March 25, 2017 – Mexico conquered the II U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup title after beating Chile in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-9 and 25-20 in one hour and 8 minutes.


Raymond Stephens scored 19 points for Mexico and also claimed the MVP Honors as well as Best Receiver and Best Server distinctions and Miguel Sarabia recorded 14 while Diego Gonzalez and Axel Tellez finished with 10 apiece. For Chile Vicente Ibarra closed with 9 points.


 Only in the final, Stephens aced seven times of the 13 registered by Mexico against merely 2 by Chile. Mexico also overcame its South American opponent in blocks 9-3 to claim its first Crown in this Age-Group.


Captain of Chile, Joaquin Leon:“Unfortunately we could not win the final. We finished in second place, we are glad and we go with the World Championship ticket.”


Player of México, Miguel Sarabia: “I want to dedicate this medal to my mother who passed away three months ago. I think that along with winning the most important thing is that we are together, united. It is beautiful to feel supported and motivated by the people.”


Coach of Chile, Ivan Villarreal: “This was a very wonderful experience, because playing against a very strong team like Mexico and getting the World Championship ticket before the final are part of a very important stage for us.”


Coach of Mexico, Gabriela Alarcón: “I am very glad. This is the result of the teamwork by the boys, the federation and the state associations that provide us their players. We had this result and now we go to the World Championship.”
