Mireya Luis received by Costa Rican President as NORCECA
Goodwill Ambassador
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, March 8, 2018 – Mireya Luis of Cuba, a
three-time Olympic champion and NORCECA goodwill ambassador, was
received at Casa Presidencial of San Jose in special audience by
Costa Rican President H.E. Luis Guillermo Solis as the
volleyball legend was visiting the Central American country on a
sport mission.
Mireya, who was accompanied during the audience by her husband
Humberto Rodriguez, a former sport minister of Cuba, informed
President Solis about the support provided by NORCECA
Confederation for the development of volleyball and beach
volleyball in Costa Rica.
Luis explained President Solis about the development plan of
NORCECA covering all national federations and regional members
based on the principles of equity and participation.
NORCECA has permanently assisted Costa Rican Volleyball
Federation with playing surfaces, volleyball equipment and
coaching which helped the country to qualify its national
women’s team to the 2010 FIVB World Championship and also the
female beach team to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Mireya, currently the president of the NORCECA Central Zone and
FIVB Board Member, met with Costa Rican Volleyball Federation
President Edgar Alvarado, who is First Executive Vice President
of NORCECA, president of AFECAVOL and also a member of FIVB
Board.
Following recommendations by President Solis, Luis and Alvarado
met with Costa Rica’s Minister of Sports Carolina Mauri
Carabaguia, a former Olympian swimmer and Pan American champion
to review the construction drawings of the new facilities
exclusively for volleyball to be raised in San Jose.
The facilities include a complex of three volleyball courts,
offices, meeting rooms, conditioning and other amenities.
NORCECA will provide the playing surface and full equipment for
one of the three courts.
During her stay in Costa Rica, Luis and Rodríguez visited the
region of Montes e Oro, Punta Arenas being received the
Municipal Mayor Luis Villalobos with warm hospitality offered by
young athletes, technicians and directors. |
