NORCECA in pain for cataclysm in Mexico

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 25, 2017 – The president of NORCECA Confederation Cristobal Marte Hoffiz expressed his sorrow in the face of the major earthquake occurred in Mexico City and surrounding states last week causing hundreds of deaths and casualties.

In a letter of condolences remitted to Mr. Jesus Perales, president of Mexican Volleyball Federation, Mr. Marte Hoffiz wrote that “the terrible news has left us stunned by the fatalities that have taken place and the pain that grips the Mexican people.”

The president of NORCECA said “the volleyball community worldwide, beg the Almighty to grant them the strength of spirit to face these adversities and offer resignation to so many families who have been affected by this cataclysm.”

The 7.1-magnitude powerful earthquake shook Mexico City and surrounding states, killing scores and leaving many trapped under collapsed buildings.

Hundreds of people died in Mexico City -- the country's capital -- and in the states of Puebla, Mexico and Morelos, officials said.

Tuesday's earthquake came more than one week after a magnitude-8.1 earthquake struck off the southern coast of the country, killing at least 90, according to the governor of the hard-hit state of Oaxaca.
