Nicaragua’s Mora & López score historic victory
PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, September 15, 2019 – Ruben
Mora and Denis López scored one historic victory on Sunday
when they became the first Nicaraguans ever to win a gold
medal in a tournament of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball
Circuit.
Carried by the powerful serves and solid blocking of Mora,
the Nicaraguans rolled past Mexico’s Josué Gaxiola and José
Luis Rubio 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) to claim the Punta Cana title
and the US$2,000 that come with it.
In the semifinals, Mora/López had defeated the U.S. Team of
Brandon Joyner and Michael Boag 2-1 (22-20, 17-21, 15-8).
The duo of Gaxiola/Rubio reached the match for the crown
after a 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) victory over Canada’s Jake McNeil
and William Kopp.
McNeil/Kopp won the bronze medal following their success
against Joyner/Boag 2-0 (21-19, 21-19).
In the matches for the 5-6 positions, Daneil Williams and
Joel Issac Theodore of Trinidad & Tobago edged St. Lucia’s
Gillian Octave and Augustin Faulkner 2-0 (21-19, 22-20)
while Martinique’s Martel Bosqui and Brice Hardy Dessources
won 2-0 (21-8, 21-8) over Bahamas’ Jon Isaacs and Wilmott
Donavan.
