Peru beats Uruguay for fifth place

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, May 13, 2017.- Peru beat Uruguay 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-10) to finish in fifth place at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup un Gimnasio Nacional of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Peru outplayed Uruguay not before overcoming a difficult second set with Uruguay’s good resistance. Peru showed experience and audacity, finishing the event with 2-2 record and Uruguay with 1-3 record.

Peru held a 35-24 margin in spiking, 6-3 in blocking and 6-0 in aces; they limited their errors to 19 points and scored on Uruguay’s 28 errors.

Top Peruvian scorers were opposite Katherine Regalado with 14 points, including nine kills, two blocks and three aces; along Kiara Montes and Leslie Leyva with 9 points apiece.  Camila Bausero once again topped Uruguay with 18 points.

Katherine Regalado, Peru’s captain: “This wasn’t the position we came to fight for, nevertheless following our loss to Argentina, we are finishing on a high note against Uruguay. Happy with this result but we admit that there’s much to work on before the world championship”.

Marco Queiroga, Peru’s Head coach: “Today we played very well on finishing the event. I am not happy with our position, but this was a good test to add to our preparation before the world championship, Peru has a ticket thru world ranking. We wanted to win the ticket by playing here. We are leaving with a lot of material to study from and set a training plan”.
