Ponce and Caguas jump ahead in Puerto Rico Semis
PONCE, Puerto Rico, April 20, 2014 – Ponce and Caguas won their
opening semifinal matches of the Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball
Superior League during the weekend.
In the Semifinals A, Ponce prevailed against a high-spirited
Mayaguez in four sets (25-23, 24-26, 28-26, 25-21) with 17
blocks to 14 by the defeated side on Saturday at Salvador Dijols
Pavilion of Ponce.
Airial Salvo led four players with double digits in the scoring
charts with 25 points, followed by Nicole Fawcett and Legna
Hernandez 19 and 17, respectively, and 12 points, including
seven blocks, from Janeliss Torres.
Shonda Cole had 25 points for Mayaguez and Diane Copenhagen
finished with 20.
In the Semifinals B, Caguas beat Carolina 3-1 (25-21, 25-21,
15-25, 25-18) at Hector Sola Bezares Coliseum of Caguas on
Sunday.
Caguas outscored Carolina 18-10 in the blocking category and 6-4
in service aces.
Stephanie Enright led a well balanced offense of the winning
side with 17 points, followed by Falyn Fonoimoana, Karina Ocasio
and Alexandra Oquendo with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Vanessa Velez had a match-high 20 points for the defeated side.
Stephanie Niemer and Katherine Harms added 19 and 10,
respectively. |
