Ponce climbs back to top place in Puerto Rico

 

PONCE, Puerto Rico, March 31, 2014 – Ponce returned to the top position of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League with a straight-set victory (25-21, 27-25, 25-17) over Mayaguez at Salvador Dijols Gymnaisum of Sunday.

 

Nicole Fawcett and Airial led the victory with 19 and 15 points, respectively. Sarai Alvarez had 13 in the loss.

 

Ponce reached to 40 points in the standings with a 13-6 win-loss record while Caguas fell to second place with 39 points and the same 13-6 mark. Mayaguez is in third place also with 13-6 but totaling 37 points.

 

In the other match on Sunday, Carolina beat Guaynabo 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) with Stephanie Niemer (24), Vanessa Velez (22) and Katherine Harms (19) leading the offense. Stephanie Holtus had 19 in the losing cause.

 

In Saturday’s action, Caguas beat Cataño 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-16) while Humacao edged Juncos in five sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 24-26, 15-8) with 24 points from Kim Willoughby.

 

Alvarez had 25 points on Friday to lead the 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21) win of Mayaguez over Guaynabo. Shonda Cole added 18 in the victory and Keila Rodriguez registered 20 in the defeat.

 

Niemer and Velez combined with 24 and 19 points, respectively, in the five-set victory (18-25, 25-17, 25-18, 18-25, 15-10) over Ponce. Salvo and Fawcett had 25 and 20 in the loss.

 

Willoughby had 23 points in the 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 victory of Humacao over Cataño on Thursday. Gina Mambru tallied 17 points for the losers.

 

In the other match of the day, Caguas beat Juncos 25-21, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15 with 20 points from Falyn Fonoimoana.
