Ponce leads close standings in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 24, 2014 – Ponce registered a
19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 victory over Caguas on Saturday to
claim sole possession of the top place of the standings in the
Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball Superior League.
Ponce now has a win-loss record of 12-5 with 36 points while
Caguas fell to 11-6 and 33 points.
The victory was highlighted by Airial Salvo and Legna Hernandez
who topped the offense of the winners with 24 and 18 points,
respectively. Falyn Fonoimoana had 23 followed by Genesis
Collazo with 14, in the loss.
In another match of Saturday, Carolina defeated Humacao 25-18,
25-14, 17-25, 25-22 with Katherine Harms and Stephanie Niemer as
the most prolific contributors with 21 and 18 points,
respectively.
Shirley Ferrer topped Humacao with 13 points while Jekaterina
Stepanova and Kim Willoughby each concluded with 12 tallies.
In Sunday’s action, Guaynabo scored a 25-13, 25-23, 25-21
victory over Juncos with Megan Ganzer leading the winning path
with 16 points.
Also, Mayaguez beat Cataño 25-19, 25-23, 25-22 to reach the
second place in the standings. Diane Copenhagen and Sarai
Alvarez had 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the winners.
In Friday’s games, Gina Mambru had 29 points in the 25-16,
35-33, 25-27, 25-18 win of Cataño over Guaynabo while Mayaguez
downed Juncos 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.
Earlier in the week, Salvo produced 30 points to lead the 25-16,
16-25, 25-20, 25-23 victory of Ponce over Humacao while Caguas
edged Carolina in five sets 25-19, 12-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13
despite the 32-point performance of Niemer in the losing effort.
The standings as of Monday are the following:
Ponce (12-5, 36), Mayaguez (12-5, 34), Caguas (11-6, 33),
Carolina (9-8, 30), Cataño (6-11, 21), Humacao (7-10, 19),
Guaynabo (7-10, 19) and Juncos (4-13, 12). |
