Puerto Rico finishes with 8 wins and third place

KOSZALIN, Poland, August 16, 2014 – Puerto Rico completed their campaign in this year’s FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix recording a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-17, 25-22) in the third place match with Poland in Group 2.

Though they failed to claim the highly coveted ticket to the Final Six coming up next week in Tokyo, Puerto Rico could be happy with their overall performance in 2014 with a final record of eight victories in eleven matches.

Puerto Rico’s superstar Karina Ocasio scored another 17 points thereby moving her personal tally in the competition up to 212 points.

United States narrowly defeated Thailand in five sets (25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-10) on Saturday.

Foluke Akinradewo led the USA with 25 points consisting of 14 kills, nine blocks and two ace serves. Onuma Sittirak had 20 points for Thailand.

Defending champions and world No.1 Brazil used substitutes to power past Dominican Republic in comfortable straight sets (25-19 25-11 29-27).

Gabriela Braga Guimaraes led Brazil with 18 points, while Bethania De La Cruz scored 14 points for Dominican Republic

Confident of beating the lower-ranked Dominicans with ease, the invincible Brazil, the only team which has yet to lose a match to their respective rivals in the 2014 World Grand Prix, fielded mostly reserve players, with only fast attacker Fabiana Claudino strengthening the team.
