Seven women tandems debut strong in Guatemala

 

   

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, March 11, 2016 - Seven tandems in the women’s field had a strong debut on the first day of actions at the 2016 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour opener in Guatemala City.

 

Tournament top seeded Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez of Cuba downed Jarisa Hynds/Christeanne Etches of Honduras by 2-0 (21-11, 21-11) followed by a victory over Kathya Vasquez/Ma Fernanda Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-15, 21-11) in Pool A.

 

The Canadian duo of Rachel Cockrell and Camille Saxton also beat the Central American representatives. They started with a victory over Vasquez/Vargas 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) and Hynds/Etches by 2-0 (21-16, 21-9).

 

Allison McColloch and Kelly Reeves of United States-B in Pool D prevailed over Malika Davidson and Ayana Dyett of Trinidad and Tobago 21-9, 21-11 and over Guatemala-A of Alarcon/Villagran 21-9, 21-16.

 

Davidson/Dyett and Alarcon/Villagran each took a victories by defeating Kimberly Hohl/Mannika Charles of U.S. Virgin Islands.

 

Nicaragua’s Elia Torres and Lolette Ramirez along with Julie Gordon/Brandie Wilkerson of Canada-A controlled the actions in Pool C. Torres/Ramirez beat Noel/Neptune of St. Lucia 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) and Villalobos/Alvarez of Guatemala-B by 2-0 (21-8, 21-7). Gordon/Wilkerson defeated the local team 2-0 (21-6, 21-12) and the Caribbean duo 2-0 (21-12, 21-12).

 

In Pool B, Claudia Rios and Gloria Santoyo of Mexico and Kimberly Dicello with partner Kendra Vanzwieten of United States-A defeated Costa Rica’s Valeria Valenciano and Marcela Araya who put up a good battle in both matches. Kimberly Dicello/ Kendra Vanzwieten by 2-0 (25-23, 21-17) while Rios/Santoyo by 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 15-11).

 

Saturday starts with matches in the women’s division with Cuba facing Canada-B, El Salvador meets Honduras and United States-A face Mexico. Pool play resumes on Saturday, followed by the quarterfinals.
