St Lucia stops Bermuda 3-0 in ECVA Under-20 opener

 

ST JOHN’s, Antigua and Barbuda, August 22, 2019:   St Lucia put aside their early jitters, to beat Bermuda 3-0 (30-28, 25-13, 25-17), at the YMCA Complex, in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Under-20 Female Volleyball Tournament.

 

Leading the scoring for St Lucia, was Captain and Outside Hitter- Amalia Louis, who had 15 points.

 

Bermuda’s topscorer was Daniella Stegmann, with 9 points. 

 

St Lucia outdid Bermuda on Blocks 5-2 and on Aces 18-5.  

 

With one win under his belt, St Lucia’s Head Coach- Terry Verdant was bubbling with confidence, after his team’s showing against the Bermudans.

 

“We were good at our reception, but was not as clinical as we should have been in attack”, Verdant said.

 

Looking forward to their next opponent, Verdant projected: “We are going to get our serves going better and work as well on our defence”.

 

Verdant reiterated: “We came here to win and that is what we plan to continue to do”.

 

Meanwhile, St Lucia’s Captain, Amalia Louis said: “It was good to see her players picking themselves up after Bermuda had a good start in the first set and that gives me a great feeling”.

 

Louis promises that her team will bring their “A”, game in their second match versus Saba.

 

Assessing his team’s lost to St Lucia, Bermuda’s Head Coach- Gary LeBlanc, had a positive outlook going forward in the tournament.  

 

“ It was a great first game to start … It was intense and a lot of energy , but after the first set we came out flat and failed to reach that intensity again”, LeBlanc reported.

 

“We have learned a lot from this first match are we have identified some areas that hopefully fix for the next match”, LeBlanc posited.

Expressing similar sentiments was Ashley Horseman, Bermuda’s Captain.

 

“We went into the match really excited and we had a lot of energy … We just needed to maintain that energy throughout the match”, the Bermuda Captain summed up.

 

Looking ahead to her team’s next match, Horseman said, “We are just going to take a step back, regain ourselves and come with good energy”.

 

Saba and Antigua and Barbuda play in match number two.
