Teamwork was key to Dominican success

Varna, Bulgaria, June 19, 2016 - The Dominican Republic claimed a 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-11) victory over Poland in the final of FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 2016 Group 2 in Varna with a fantastic 24-point contribution by Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez. But it was teamwork that was the key to the Dominican success, according to their coach Marcos Kwiek.

Marcos Kwiek, coach of the Dominican Republic: “First, I want to congratulate all the girls. They did a lot of work and we are very happy now. It was actually teamwork. Everybody put a little bit of what they have to do. It is also very important that there are two Caribbean countries on the podium which is a great achievement for world volleyball.”

Jacek Nawrocki, coach of Poland: “In the first sets we played on our terms and that is why we were winning. After that the Dominican team started playing on higher level and it was harder for us to play. I could see it in most of the elements and we could not stop Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez and Bethania De La Cruz with our blocks.”

Bethania De La Cruz, captain of the Dominican Republic: “We are very pleased that we have earned the gold. We started a little bit slow, but we were able to step hard and to continue like that. Now we are very, very happy to go to the higher group next year.”
