Top three seeds undefeated at Cayman Islands

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, April 26, 2019. - Top seeded USA team Brittany Hochevar and Carly Wopat, the second seeded Mexican duo Zaira Orellana and Martha Revuelta and Cubans Maylen Deliz and Leila Martinez are undefeated on day one of the Cayman Islands NORCECA Beach Volleyball tournament.

The number one seeds Brittany Hochevar and Carly Wopat of United States, with authority outplayed Amber Bennett and Lisa Dietrich Lisa of U.S. Virgin Islands-B 2-0 (21-11, 21-10), followed by a 2-0 (21-8, 21-12) win to Jessica Wolfenden and Stefania Gandolfi of Cayman Islands-B.

Also with a solid start, the second seeds Mexico’s Zaira Orellana and Martha Revuelta prevailed 2-0 (21-7, 21-10) in their first match to Jamaican tandem of Petal Smith and Kai Wright, then clinched a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) win against Guatemala’s Paola Alvarado and Estefanie Bethancourt.

Cubans Maylen Deliz and Leila Martinez had it harder in pool C, winning a rough match to Valeria Valenciano and Marcela Araya of Costa Rica after a setback in the second set 2-1 (21-19, 11-21, 15-10); earlier they beat Melanie Valenciana and Jade Vitt of U.S. Virgin Islands-B 2-0 (21-14, 21-17).

In pool D, Swan Mendoza and Elia Machado of Nicaraga finished with double wins against Canada-A of Anna Dunn-Suen/Caleigh Cruickshank 2-0 (21-13, 21-17) and Cayman’s Marissa Harrison and Ileann Powery 2-0 (21-14, 21-12).

Canadian Devon May and Rian Lenarduzzi also included a double victory in pool A, defeating Wolfenden/Gandolfi (CAY-B) 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) and La-Teisha Joseph alongside Malika Davidson of Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 (21-17, 21-8).

In addition, Kathya Vásquez and Ma. Fernanda Vargas of El Salvador in pool B handled well their two outings of the day; defeating 2-0 (21-9, 21-11) Smith and Wright of Jamaica and 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) against Brenda Allen/Shanicia Dyer of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Pool-play concludes on Saturday, followed by the quarterfinal round.
