USA and Cuba start winning at World Cup

 

   

MATSUMOTO, Japan, August 22, 2015 - Reigning world champions the United States got off to a winning start at the 2015 FIVB Women's World Cup as they swept Korea 3-0 here Saturday afternoon.

 

Foluke Akinradewo, Kimberly Hill and Karsta Lowe scored 15, 13 and 12 points respectively.


to lead the American women to the 25-15, 25-22 and 25-15 victory while Korea were led by Kim Hee-jin with 11 points.

 

In Tokyo, Cuba defeated Kenya 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-22) at the Yoyogi National Stadium on Saturday.

 

Cuban lefty Regla Gracia may have lost the scoring showdown against Kenyan Mercy Moim on a slim difference of 25 and 26 points, respectively, but Gracia’s contribution lifted Cuba to take the four-set win. 

 

Also, Nataliya Obmochaeva powered Russia’s 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-18) win over Dominican Republic in the opening match of the first round.

 

Obmochaeva spearheaded the Russian offence with 24 points, including 18 spikes, five blocks and an ace. Yana Scherban contributed 14 points for Russia, while Gina Mambru recorded 12 points for the Dominican Republic.
