USA finish fifth, Serbia vs Italy for the gold
YOKOHAMA, Japan, October 18, 2018 - Kimberly Hill scored a
match-high 24 points as the United States downed Japan 3-1
(25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-23) in the fifth-place match at the
FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship on Friday night.
Karsta Lowe added 17 points and Jordan Larson 12 in the victory
for USA. Risa Shinnabe was the high scorer for Japan with 16 in
the loss.
Japan's speed was no match for the power of USA on this night.
The Americans dominated the first two sets before Japan fought
back in the third.
Japan started well in the fourth set before losing energy and
seeing USA surge past them.
In semifinals:
Paola Egonu scored a match-high 44 points as Italy downed China
3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 29-31, 17-15). Italy will play Serbia
on Saturday for the title.
Miryam Sylla had 23 points and Anna Danesi 12 in the victory for
Italy. Zhu Ting paced China with 26 points in the loss.
It was a fantastic match played by both teams, with power being
the theme as both sides blasted away on offense and blocked well
on defense.
Tijana Boskovic scored a match-high 29 points as Serbia defeated
the Netherlands 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 25-19, 25-23) in the
semifinals.
Brankica Mihajlovic added 21 points in the win and Milena Rasic
had 12. Lonneke Sloetjes was the high scorer for the Dutch in
the loss with 23 points. |
