USA lose to Japan, Dominicans beat Egypt

CORDOBA AND BOCA DEL RIO, Mexico, July 19, 2017 – Japan defeated United States 3-0 (25-22, 25-18 25-17) in Pool F of the U20 FIVB Women’s World Championship.

It was the second defeat for USA after losing to Russia in five sets one day earlier.

Reina Tokoku and Shiori Aratani had 13 and 12 points, respectively, as the main Japanese offensive players. Brionne Butler had a match-high 16 points for the defeated side.

In the consolation round for the 9 to 16 positions, the Dominican Republic improved to a 2-0 win-loss record after a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-19) win over Egypt.

Vielka Peralta had 12 points for the winners while Mesalina Yosil, Madeline Guillen and Geraldine Gonzalez each contributed 8 points in the victory.

Italy defeated Cuba 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-15) with Elena Pietrini as leading scorer with 9 points. Yamisleydis Viltres had 6 points in the loss.

Peru outplayed Mexico 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-14) behind the attack of Leslie Leyva who had 19 points and Nicole Abreu who added 15 in the victory. Uxue Guereca and Karina Flores each had 13 points for Mexico.
