USA, Russia, China, Serbia and Italy qualify to Tokyo

SHREVEPORT, United States, August 4, 2019 – The United States breezed past Argentina in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-13) to win Pool C of the FIVB World Olympic Qualification Tournament on Sunday.

Jordan Thompson and Kelsey Robinson led the Americans with 16 and 13 points, respectively, while Elina Rodriguez and Paola Yamila Nizetich each had 8 points for the South Americans.

In Kaliningrad, host Russia made an astounding comeback to win Pool E after trailing Korea 0-2 and 18-22. They scored a 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-11) win that sees them through to the women's volleyball tournament of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Earlier on Sunday, Canada beat Mexico 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-17) behind 21 points by Alexa Gray.

Earlier on Sunday, host China had secured their presence in Tokyo 2020 to defend their women's volleyball Olympic title from Rio 2016, after they decisively shut out Turkey 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) at home in Ningbo. Also in Ningbo, Germany dispatched the Czech Republic 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16).

In Pool A in Wroclaw, Poland, Serbia advanced to the Olympics by defeating Poland 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23). Also, Thailand defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18),

In Pool F in Catania, Italy, host Italy qualified to Tokyo 2020 after defeating Netherlands 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22). Also, Belgium crushed Kenya 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-7).
