Van Ryk serves 8 aces as Canada beats Peru

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 8, 2018 – Kiera Van Ryk served 8 aces as Canada stormed past Peru in straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-17) in Pool A of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Sunday.

Van Ryk finished with 18 points as the best scorer of the match while Autumn Bailey and Emily Baglio chipped in with 12 and 8 points, respectively. Karla Ortiz finished with 9 points as the top Peruvian offensive player.

Canada dominated Peru in attacks 41-25 in service winners 10-2 and also in blocks 5-2.

Megan Cyr, captain of Canada: “We have many young players but they showed no fears and helped us to win this match against a team like Peru.”

Clarivett Yllescas, captain of Peru: “A little bit sad because we played a good first set but were not able to close it. Their serves put a lot of pressure after the second set. Our team is better than that and I expect to improve.”

Marcello Abbondanza, coach of Canada: “I am very happy for the result and proud about the performance of my young players like Van Ryk who is only 18 years-old.  They were nervous in the first set but we have many players without international experience.”

Carlos Aparicio, coach of Peru: “It is very difficult to coach a team after being together only for two months. Our team is not complete but Canada played great. We showed some development and could have won the first set but committed mistakes due to inexperience.”
