Vargas and Brayelin each score 21, Dominicans are 2-1

APELDOORN, Netherlands, July 9, 2017 -  Annerys Vargas and Brayelin Martinez each blasted 21 points carrying the Dominican Republic to a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18) victory over Thailand in Group 1 of FIVB World Grand Prix on Sunday.

The victory gave the Dominican Republic a 2-1 win-loss record after the conclusion of the first weekend of actions.

Bethania de la Cruz and Jineiry Martínez added 17 and 15 points, respectively, in the victory. Hattaya Bamrungsuk was the best for Thailand with 18 points, followed by Pleumjit Thinkaow with 16 points in the loss.

The Dominicans dominated their opponents with a strong defense at the net with a 15-5 margin in blocks led by Vargas and Jineiry Martinez who each collected five.

“We focused on serving strong to neutralize their setter who is very fast and then took advantage of our size to block them,” said Niverka Marte after the match.
