Vargas has five golds and one silver medal
BARRANQUILLA, Colombia, July 25, 2018 – In the middle of the
emotional celebration after winning their fifth consecutive
title at the Central American and Caribbean Games by the
Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team, one outstanding feat
was overlooked: Annerys Vargas has been part of each one of
those squads.
The winning streak by the Dominican Team started in San Salvador
2002 and has continued in Cartagena 2006, Mayaguez 2010,
Veracruz 2014 and Barranquilla 2014.
The fifth gold medal by Vargas was added to her collection in
the quadrennial games as she was part of the 1998 team that won
a silver medal in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
The slender middle blocker, who will turn 37 next August 7,
still is one of the key pieces in the starting team of coach
Marcos Kwiek as it showed during the tournament in Barranquilla
won by the Dominicans with a 5-0 win-loss record.
“I try to manage Annerys over the course of the competitions
giving her the necessary rest in some matches and reserving her
experience for those when we need the most of it,” Kwiek
commented before the tournament.
Despite not playing all the sets for the Barranquilla
tournament, Vargas scored 13 blocks as she finished as the
fourth best blocker of the event. |
