Women’s Central American Cup gets underway in Belize

BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 4, 2018 – Costa Rica beat Panama 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-15) to open the XX Women’s Senior Central American Volleyball Cup on Saturday.

Tannia Carazo and Yuliana Gonzalez each recorded 14 points as the offensive leaders for Costa Rica, Hashlyn Cuero had 9 in the losing cause.

The other two matches of day one were extended to the maximum five sets with Guatemala and El Salvador coming out victorious.

Martha Guillermo led five players in double figures with 15 points as Guatemala edged Nicaragua 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 15-10) in the second match.

Astrid Gonzalez and Aury Alvarez contributed 14 and 13, respectively, in the win while María Villagran and María García each chipped in with 11 points. Amelia Hernandez and Josafat Díaz had 13 and 12 in the losing cause.

El Salvador outdueled host Belize 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 26-24, 11-25, 17-15) in the last match of the day.

Gabriela Funes and Denisse Rogel finished with 17 and 12, respectively, for the winners. Sherika Burton had a match-high 27 points for Belize while Shantell Arnold added 18 and Tichele Solis finished with 11 points.
