WINNIPEG, Canada, June 7, 2008.- An intense match
gave the gold medal of the 2008 Men’s Pan American
Cup to the USA, defeating Canada 3-1. Set scores
were: 25-22, 27-29, 25-22, 25-22.
Canada made too many mistakes in the first set,
but they came back strong at the beginning of the
second set with a lead of 5-0. With many exciting
rallies, they managed to break the two point
separation first and win the second set. Things
got a little shaky in the third set and the
Canucks could not bridge the gap created by the
strong Americans. The same story repeated itself
in the fourth set, for the Americans to win the

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 7, 2008.- Mexico and
Dominican Republic battled until the end to bring
the bronze medal back home. After 5 close sets,
Dominican Republic closed their participation to
the 2008 Pan American Cup with a win. The set
scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12.
It was a very tight game as no team was able to
create a comfortable gap for themselves. The
rallies were long and teams kept exchanging the
points, creating an exciting match that lasted
almost 2 hours. The Mexican setter was impressive
at finding his middles who managed to play around
the Dominican Republic block. But it was not
enough to say fiesta yet. The Dominican stepped up
their game in the fifth set and stole the medal.

Trinidad & Tobago blanked Puerto Rico for the
sixth place |

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 7, 2008.- The win of
Trinidad and Tobago over Puerto Rico gives them
the sixth place. Trinidad & Tobago managed to end
the game in four sets. Set scores were: 23-25,
25-18, 25-22, 25-23.
All through this tournament, Trinidad & Tobago
always kept a high energy on court. They
constantly reduce their number of mistakes,
leaving no chance to the Puerto Rico crew during
this last match.
Nolan Tash was the head scorer for Trinidad &
Tobago, with 26 points. Teammates Mark Daly and
Marc Anthony Honore both got 12 points.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 6, 2008.- Canada will
be playing in the gold medal match following
their victory over Mexico. After a scary first
set, the Canucks did not dissapoint their fans
and won the next three sets. Set scores were:
18-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-18.
Canada kept doing mistakes in the first set
and seemed unable to pass the Mexican serve.
But a few good blocks in the second set gave
the momentous back to the Canadians and they
did not loose it until the end of the match,
blocking everything coming their way.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 6, 2008.- USA defeated
Dominican Republic for the access to the gold
medal match. Republic Dominican will have a shot
for the bronze medal. The sets were tight but USA
won the three needed ones. Set scores were: 25-22,
32-30, 22-25, 25-23.
The whole game got the spectators holding their
breath. Both teams were making spectacular plays
and rallies were impressive. It was an exciting
match but the young and tall USA players dominated
the court.
USA Coach Alan Knipe declared: “It was really good
for my team to get in a highly competitive and
hardly fought game. We have not been playing
together for a long time so it is good to be
together in this situation.

Costa Rica finished in fifth place at the Pan Am

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 6, 2008.- Costa Rica
battled with Puerto Rico to earn the fifth place
at the 2008 Pan American Cup. In four very close
sets, Costa Rica won the match 23-25, 22-25,
25-20, 23-25.
Costa Rica (61) created another upset by beating
Puerto Rico (8). The Costa Rican players were
united on the court and linked all their actions.
The Puerto Rico team was disappointed but still
has another game tomorrow. They will battle
against Trinidad & Tobago.
Costa Rica had two players with 15 points: Jeffery
Calderon Orozco and Jose-Pablo Zumbado Mora.
Rafael Castro also earned 12 points for the Costa
Rica team.

Dominican Republic defeated Costa Rica in the
quarterfinal round |

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 5, 2008.- Dominican
Republic gained their spot in the semi final
defeating Costa Rica in three straight sets. Set
scores were 25-21, 28-26, 25-15.
Dominican Republic came very close to losing the
second set, as Costa Rica kept responding to their
play. But Dominican Republic still earned their
spot in the semi-final. They will play against
United States tomorrow.
The star of the Dominican Republic lineup was
Victor Bastista Lemos with 17 points. Costa Rican
players Jose-Pablo Zumbado Mora and Jeffery
Calderon Orozco respectively gained 13 and 12
points.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 5, 2008.- Team Mexico
blanked Puerto Rico in the quarterfinal. The
Mexican squad outscored Puerto Rico 3-0 and
created the first upsets of the tournament. Set
scores were 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.
Mexico played a very consistent game tonight. They
finished the game with a strong block from the 6’6
player, Thomas Aguilera, his fifth of the game.
This win places them against Canada in the next
round.
Thomas Aguilera led the Mexican effort with 13
points, followed by Irving Bricio and Leonardo
Manzo, who got 12 and 11 points. Ulises Maldonado
was the leader of Puerto Rico, achieving 17
points.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 4, 2008.- Canada did not
disappointed their fans as they finished first of
their pool. They achieved their second win against
the Dominican Republic, outscoring their opponent
3-0. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-22.
Host team Canada had more trouble against
Dominican Republic team than any other opponent so
far. But Nicholas Cundy cemented their path to the
victory with a big kill to end the match.
Cundy acted as the leader of the Canadian squad
tonight. He cumulated 14 points, featuring 11
attacks, 2 blocks and 1 ace. The captain of the
Dominican team, Elvis Contreras got 13 points and
Jose Caceras Gomez got 11 points.

Mexico defeated Costa Rica in 3 straight sets |

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 4, 2008.- Team Mexico
downed Costa Rica in 3 straight sets tonight, to
finish second of pool A. Set scores were 25-19,
29-27, 25-17, for the Mexican crew.
Costa Rica came very close from stealing the
second set but could not close the deal. Mexico
benefited from the errors of their opponents and
went all the way to the top. The game lasted 73
minutes.
The best scorer of the game was Francisco Enriquez
from Mexico, with 14 points. He was followed by
his colleague Irving Bricio, who got 11 points and
by the Costa Rican Jeffery Calderon Orozco, 11
points.

Puerto Rico defeated Trinidad &

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 4, 2008.- The third day of
the Men’s Pan American Cup started with a
thrilling match. Trinidad & Tobago played hard and
showed Puerto Rico how serious they were about
this tournament. After 5 exciting sets, Puerto
Rico declared victory. Set scores were 25-20,
21-25, 25-22, 14-25, 13-15.
Both teams kept exchanging the sets victory until
the final moment. Puerto Rico finally took the
lead in the fifth set and played strong until the
end. It was a great match for both teams.
Nolan Tash of Trinidad & Tobago cumulated a total
of 25 points. Mark Daly and Sean Morrison
respectively got 14 and 12 points. On the Puerto
Rico side, Ulises Maldonado earned 20 points.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 3, 2008.- Mexico had to
face USA for their first match of the Men’s Pan
American Cup. They put a great effort on the field
but after 3 sets, the referee blew the whistle in
favor of the USA. Set scores were 25-20, 25-11,
25-16, for USA.
Mexico showed great defense but could not side
out. The American team was well prepared and kept
winning the points.
The best scorer for USA was Captain Andrew Hein
with 11 points. His teammate Evan Patak followed
him closely with 10 points.

great fight against Dominican Republic for their
second match. Despite all their efforts on the
court, they could not manage to steal a set from
the Dominican team. Set scores were 25-17, 22-22,
27-25, in favor of Dominican Republic.
Trinidad & Tobago had a lot of chances in the
third set but could not close the deal. Dominican
Republic kept reposting to their attempt until
they got those two needed points to end the set.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 3, 2008.- Canada achieved
their second victory against Puerto Rico. The
Canucks out-gamed the other squad for a win of
3-0. Set scores were 25-14, 25-15, 25-13.
Team Canada was all flames for this first game of
the day. Performing in front of bleachers filled
with school kids, they put up a great show for
their young cheering crowd. The match ended is 63
minutes, sending the kids back on the school
benches for the afternoon!
Dallas Soonias was the star of Canada with 13
attacks and 1 block, for a total of 14 points. His
colleague Nicholas Cundy cumulated 11 points. On
the Costa Rica side, Ulises Maldonado got a total
of 10 points.

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 2, 2008.- Trinidad and
Tobago could not get much passed the home town
team today. Team Canada took the lead during this
match and won 3-0. Set scores were, 25-12, 25-13,
25-13.
Although Trinidad and Tobago started with an
advantage of 8-6 in the first set, Team Canada did
not wait any longer before stepping up and win the
set. They were very consistent all game and did
not give any chance to their opponent.
The best scorer was Toontje Van Lankvelt from
Canada, with 11 points. He was also the best
blocker, cumulating 5 kill blocks.

Costa Rica fall 3 straight against powerful USA |

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 2, 2008.- The last match
of the night featured the proven United States
against the 61 ranked Costa Rica. The game ended
after three sets, with a score of 25-15, 25-18,
25-17 in favor of the United States.
With a start of 7-0 in the second set, the United
States kept the momentum and finished the game in
60 minutes. The tall United States team did not
give any chance to the Costa Rican players.

Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico |

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 2, 2008.- The opening round
action of the 2008 Men’s Pan American Cup began
this afternoon in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For this
occasion, Dominican Republic defeated their first
rival Puerto Rico. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19,
22-25, 25-21.
After winning the first two sets, Dominican
Republic could not close the third set. They put
up a good fight but Puerto Rico kept playing with
their block to end the set. However, Dominican
Republic replied strongly in the fourth and last
set.
Leading the way was Elvis Contreras of Dominican
Republic. The captain cumulated 19 points,
including 17 attacks.

Seven Teams competing in Men’s Pan
Am Cup |

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, June 1, 2008 - With Cuba late
withdrew, seven teams are competing in the 2008
Men’s Pan American Cup. This 3rd edition is being
held in Canada for the first time in 2008 and is a
qualifying event for the 2009 Men’s America Cup,
held annually in South America.
Teams are divided in two pools with the winner of
each pool going directly to semi final round.
