Dominican Republic won the gold medal at Women’s

MEXICALI, Baja California, June 7, 2008.- The
Dominican Republic won a sensational five-setter
over Brazil to take home the gold medal in the
Women’s Pan American Cup.
Middle blocker Cindy Rondon scored with one of her
total 13 blocks for the final point of the match
that capped nine days of exciting volleyball. The
score was 26-24, 30-28, 22-25, 19-25, 15-11.
Bethania de la Cruz and Rondon scored 24 and 23
points respectively to lead the new champions.
Sidarka Nunez contributed 19 points and Milagros
Cabral and Annerys Vargas chipped in 11 and 10
respectively. Brazilian Regiane Bidias topped all
the scorers with 25 tallies and .“We wanted this medal so badly,” said an emotional
Rondon.

Argentina won the bronze medal of the Women’s Pan
American Cup by defeating Puerto Rico 3-1 (26-24,
25-18, 16-25, 25-18).
Three players –Yamila Nizetich, Georgina Klug and
Georgina Pinedo- contributed 12 points to the
Argentinean triumph. Ileana Leyendeker added 9
including five blocks. Sarai Alvarez led Puerto
Rico with 14 and Shanon Torregrosa and Aury Cruz
each had 11 tallies.
“To be in the podium is something historic. We
tried our best all the time and the credit is for
the group,” said libero Marianela Robinet.

USA Team had to battle for five sets to defeat

for the first two sets when they almost completely

Argentina scored an easy victory over Trinidad &
Tobago in straight sets by score of 25-13, 25-17,
25-16 in the first match of Pool A in the Women’s
Pan American Cup.
The young Argentineans dominated the even younger
and less experienced Trinidadians in all aspects
of the game and coach Horacio Bastit had the
chance to use all his players.
Ileana Leyendeker led Argentina with 8 points and
Natali Flaviani and Yamila Nizetich added 7 and 6
respectively. Taila de Souza, Krystle Esdelle and
Rheeza Grant each had 7 for Trinidad & Tobago.

Canada edged Cuba in five sets |

TIJUANA, Baja California, May 30, 2008.- Canada
took advantage of an erratic night by Cuba
combined with a big offensive job of Tammy Mahon
and Emely Cordonier and won in five sets in the
nightcap of Pool B.
The Canadians defeated the four-time champions of
the Pan American Cup by score of 20-25, 25-19,
21-25, 25-12, 17-15.
Cuba started dominating the match and looked like
it was going to be an easy night, but the
Canadians never gave up and kept their composure
although the Cubans took the first set. Canada had
a strong reaction in the next two sets and
dominated in the fourth.

Puerto Rico beat Peru 3-0 |

TIJUANA, Baja California, May 30, 2008.-
Puerto Rico took advantage of its blocking and
offense to dominate Peru 3-0 in the second match
of Pool B. The score was 25-20, 25-17, 25-21.
The Puerto Ricans benefited from the Peruvian’s
errors in their reception to build a comfortable
lead in the first set. The South Americans started
dominating the first part of the second set only
to see their rivals to overcome the deficit with
the effective attacks of Aury Cruz and Karina
Ocasio.

Brazil defeated Venezuela in straight sets |

TIJUANA, Baja California, May 30, 2008.- Brazil
started its participation in the Women’s Pan
American Cup with a triumph over Venezuela in
straight sets by score of 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 in
Pool B.
The stronger attacks of Brazilians Natalia Pereira
and Regiane Bidias were the difference in the
first and third sets when the winners dominated
from start to finish.
Pereira led Brazil with 18 points and Jayce
Andrade was the best for Venezuela with 10
tallies.

The top four teams, including the highest ranked
of South America, win tickets to participate in

MEXICALI, Baja California, May 29, 2008.- Cuba has
been the dominant team in the history of the
Women's Pan American Cup winning the gold medal in
four of the six previous tournaments. USA and
Brazil have won the other two competitions.
The seventh edition of this intercontinental
competition is scheduled to start on Friday 30 in
the cities of Mexicali and Tijuana, Baja
California.
This is the fifth time, including the first three,
that Mexico is hosting the event. Dominican
Republic and Puerto Rico were the organizers of
the fourth and fifth editions.
Dominican Republic has been vice champions in
three occasions and finished third in three other
times.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, May 27, 2008.-
The future of U.S. Women's National Volleyball
will be showcased during the Pan American Cup, the
2008 season-opening event for Team USA, held May
30-June 7 at Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico.
While the future will be displayed, some of the
American players will also be evaluated for one of
12 roster spots at the 2008 Olympic Games. The
future may be now for some of these athletes.
