GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 10,
2010 – Canada finished in seventh place after
defeating Costa Rica 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 22-25,
25-20, 15-9) in the only match that so far, has
lasted more than 3 sets on the next-to-last day
of the NORCECA Continental Boys’ Youth
Tournament.
On the winning side, the biggest
point contributors were Taylor Lebo (15), Mathew
Silver (14) and Scott Brunet (12), although the
highest scorer of the game was Costa Rica’s
Richy Vargas with 19 points.
Donald Saxton, Technical Director
for Canada, commented “it was fun to play such a
close match. I was happy with the energy we
brought. Today was different for us as we got
more aggressive with the attack, though we had
some trouble defending against of the attacks
from our rivals.”
Hitter William Bremner, Team
Captain for the northern team, remarked “both
teams brought a lot of energy; you could feel
the adrenaline. It was interesting to play in
such a big stadium.”
Juan Alvarado, Technical Director
for Costa Rica, felt that his team’s objective
was met in this tournament, adding “we put to
practice our tactical discipline but tiredness
was a limiting factor. Despite that, it was our
best game yet. We’re trying to implement a
system of play that is in line with
international standards.”
Setter Andre Rickly, Team Captain
for Costa Rica, considered that “it was an
intense competition and I personally think that
matches like these are very good. We enjoyed it
very much. We fought and learned a lot.”
