Thompson
scores 46 but Costa Rica out duels Trinidad &
Tobago
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 28, 2010 –
Channon Thompson fired 46 points but could not
prevent Trinidad & Tobago from losing a
five-setter to Costa Rica (25-12, 22-25, 25-13,
22-25, 15-11) in the opening match of Day Two in
the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Championship on
Wednesday.
In a Pool A match, the Costa Ricans (1-0)
prevailed the powerful attack of the
Trinidadians (0-2) with crafty offensive plays.
Tracy Fernandez and Gabriela Arias contributed
18 and 11 points respectively to the victory.
“We gave our best and played as a team but
Trinidad & Tobago fought back all the time and
never quit,” said Fernandez, the captain of
Costa Rica.
“It was a very tense match and could have gone
either way,” said Alberto Blanco, the Costa
Rican coach. “The coin was in the air until the
last minute.”
“I am extremely proud of our team,” said
Thompson. “We played passionately with our
hearts out.”
“The experience of Costa Rica prevailed at the
end,” said Trinidadian coach Macsood Ali. “We
need to play more at this level”.
